Understanding God: Characteristics And All

smiley-face-clip-art-emotions-clipart-panda-free-clipart-images-vm5cuy-clipart

So I’ve decided to read the bible from beginning to end. I haven’t given myself a timeframe or anything of the sort because my reason for doing it is simply to understand God better, so I’m not trying to rush the process. I really want to understand the principles within which he operates and see more of His heart in situations so that I may live a more pleasing life to Him. In times past I found the Old Testament tedious to say the least and there was no pleasure in reading the genealogy of the men of old or the rules by which they had to live, but lately, I’ve come to appreciate the wisdom of the old scriptures and the revelation they bring as it relates to who God is and what he stands for.

One such revelation is just how important obedience is to God. Deuteronomy 28 in the NKJV started with the title “Blessings in Obedience” where the promises of blessings to the children of Israel were encapsulated in 15 verses. Then from verse 16 Moses speaks to the Israelites about the “Curses on Disobedience”. The next FIFTY-THREE verses tell of the curses that will come upon the Israelites if they should disobey God’s commands.

That’s a big difference in terms of volume and it’s not that the blessings weren’t bountiful or gratifying but it shows how seriously God takes disobedience. I’ve seen other instances in the bible where the punishment for one person’s disobedience affected an entire group of people and I’ve heard a lot of sermons on the importance of being obedient to God. What this chapter did was bring it home for me. It showed me that God has always hated disobedience, that it’s a part of His character. Yes He’s loving, yes He’s gracious, yes He’s merciful but a major characteristic of who God is lies in His love for obedience from His people and His displeasure in disobedience.

For me, what I’m taking away from this is that if I want to live a successful Christian life and continuously walk in God’s favour then obedience to God’s word needs to be a major part of what I do. I can never settle for simply knowing what the bible says but I must make a conscious effort to live out the word. Now, it’s not that I’m saying there isn’t a provision in grace and mercy for those times when I make mistakes or willingly go against what God requires of me, but ultimately, if I’m to live victoriously then I’ll have to consciously live an obedient life and see the blessings and favour of God shine through in everything I do.

Daily Dose – Thank You

jesus

1 Chronicles 16:8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!

God has been so good to me. When I look at my life and think on all the things that he saved me from I can’t help but say thank you.

So many times we give thanks for the very big breakthrough or the very small blessings like waking up and having food and clothing, and we are supposed to.

But there are some in-between things as well, some things that God saved us from or took us through even when we didn’t acknowledge the role he played in our lives. Today I thank God for loving me and protecting me even when I didn’t love or acknowledge him.

My life could have been so messed up if not God’s grace. Thank you Lord for your grace and mercy.

What are you thankful for today?

Daily Dose – Loving Correction

Proverbs-3-12

Proverbs 3:12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights

Do you feel pain of God’s correction?

Take heart, since it shows He loves you.

Just as a loving father will not let his child walk in a dangerous place,  your heavenly Father is redirecting you onto another path.

Today’s discipline may hurt, but in days to come, your sorrow will turn to joy as you reap the blessing that follows obedience.

Your Father loves you deeply.

Daily Dose – Getting What You Give

Sky over Wheat Plants

2 Corinthians 9:6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

What you give is what you get. That’s true in life, and it’s also true spiritually.

Anyone who tries to hold their finances close will be letting go of spiritual blessings, while the person who shares generously gains in so many ways.

It’s hard to give up worldly treasures, but when you give in the name of Jesus, you will never run short.

Daily Dose – Children

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

What a promise for Christian parents!

When you feel pressured by the task, take comfort. You are not alone; your father is with you and promises that the effective witness of your life, as you teach your children His way, will not fail to bless them.

Parents who have just come to Christ can begin the training today. It is never too late to share your faith with those you love most.

Daily Dose – An Obedient Life

Psalm 119:1  Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord!

Want to be blessed? Then don’t live a sin-filled life.

God can’t pour out blessings on anyone who consistently ignores His commands.

Blessings belong to those who hear God’s word and take it to heart, living it out in love.

Want to be blessed?

Obey the master, you’ll live blamelessly and joyfully.

Daily Dose – Living For Christ

Romans 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Living for Christ through his spirit offers real life, overflowing and abundant. Blessings spill over in obedient lives, but the world, at war with God, doesn’t understand.

Unbelievers never feel the touch of the Spirit in their hearts and lives, Jesus’ gentle love is foreign to them.

Put to death worldly misdeeds, and instead of the emptiness of the world, you’ll receive blessings indeed.

Proving God by Acting in Faith

Matthew 17:20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.Nothing will be impossible for you.”

I had the pleasure of sitting down with a woman of remarkable faith on Saturday night and she shared with me many testimonies of her faith in God and his answers to her prayers. Below is one such testimony that truly demonstrates the faithfulness of Christ if we should only have faith in him and his word.

ANN MARIE’S TESTIMONY

Ann Marie woke up one Sunday morning with no money and no food and her young daughter to provide for. She said to her daughter “Get dressed for church. Today I’m going to teach you how to have faith in God.” Her daughter Shanice was in her teens at the time and was convinced that her mother was crazy, but she did as she was told and got ready for church.

Dressed and with their bibles in hand the two made their way to the main road to get transportation to church. Ann Marie stopped a maxi filled with people and said to the the driver, “Drive my daughter and I need to get to church in Barataria (twenty minutes drive from their home) but we have no money.” In that instant God showed up and the driver told them to come and don’t worry about the money.

God’s work for Ann Marie wasn’t done there. She danced and praised and worshiped God during the service and on leaving the church she sat on the steps and said ” Lord if you are my God and you will provide just as you said you would send me a job so I can provide for my daughter and I.” When she got up and started walking down the steps of the church she heard a clapping behind her and someone calling out. She turned around and a member of the church who she did not know beckoned her. “Do you have a job?” he said, without responding to the man she said “Thank You Jesus”. Ann Marie was offered a job to clean two gyms the man owned.

Even now God was not done showing off for her. She still did not have money to get home or food for her and her daughter to eat. The two proceeded to leave the church laughing and giggling, not understanding what was the reason for the immense joy they felt in the midst of their desperation. Yet again she heard clapping and someone calling behind her, when she turned around a woman from the worship team was making her way towards her. The woman; who Ann Marie did not know, handed her forty dollars and said “God has directed my heart to give this to you.”

God had given Ann Marie a way to and from church and a job, but her faith in him allowed for him to prove himself even further in her life. By now Shanice was hungry and asked her mom if she could go to her grandmother’s house for lunch. Ann Marie told her “No! Today I will teach you to have faith like your mother. Don’t worry God will provide.” On their way home the two met a neighbor who inquired what they were going to cook for lunch. Speaking in faith Ann Marie called out a menu and agreed to send some food for the neighbor later that evening. Shanice, although seeing God work for them so far was convinced that her mother was mad.

When they got home Ann Marie said to Shanice, “Light the stove and put three pots with water on it.” She then proceeded to wash clothes in her hand by the sink without soap. While washing Shanice indicated to her that the water was boiling down. “Fill it back up, God is going to send something to put in those pots.” Shanice did as she was told and went outside to play. After twenty minutes or so Ann Marie heard her daughter skipping towards her shouting “Mummy, Mummy yuh not mad. God sent somebody, uncle just came and handed me this envelope and told me to give it to you because he couldn’t stay.” In that envelope was eight hundred dollars. Ann Marie now had the money she needed to buy the items needed for the menu she declared for lunch that Sunday.

I know by now you think that God was done proving himself to these two. However he had one more favor in store for them. When the two arrived at the grocery, the store owner had closed leaving a group of people standing outside the door. Ann Marie and her daughter were a part of that crowd and God gave them complete favor in this situation. In that moment; which would have seemed to be defeat for most, the grocery owner cracked the door and pointed to her “What did you want to get?”  Ann Marie replied “Just a couple items to cook.” “Come.” was the reply of the owner and he let them both into the store. People could not understand how this woman and her daughter got favor over them and started cursing and shouting insults at them. All the while Ann Marie was praising God because she knew that it was his favor in her life that opened that door for her.

Ann Marie taught her daughter a great lesson that day. She showed her daughter that if we put all our trust in our father and have faith in him he will see us through.

Like Ann Marie, if God has done anything in your life, please share your testimony with us at testifywithme@gmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you.

God Bless You!

Reflection……….

While worshiping in church this morning, I asked god “what should I write about today?” and I was told to just give him thanks. I look around me and I realize that god has truly blessed me. He’s given me a wonderful family, I have a job, I never go hungry, I have a roof over my head, clothes on my back and most of all he’s given me his holy spirit as a comforter in my times of need.

Today I urge you to take some time and reflect on the many ways god has blessed you and give him thanks. Although some of us may not be where we would like to be or maybe we’re praying for deliverance from a situation, just remember that no matter how bad things are he has the power to make them better.

I thank god today for his goodness and mercies towards me and although there are things in my life I am struggling with I know that I am a work in progress and my destiny is in his hands.

God bless you!
