Faith: Believing God Despite The Odds

strong-faith.jpg

If God says something will happen, our faith is not in waiting to see if that thing happens, but in believing it will happen despite our circumstances.

I’ve been musing over Romans 4 and it’s account of how Abraham’s belief in what God told him was accounted to him for righteousness. I know, that’s a lot of Biblical Jargon there but what it simply means is that Abraham wasn’t considered a righteous man because he did what God instructed him to do, neither was it because of the end result of his interactions with God. He was considered a righteous man because he believed God.

Romans 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

When God told Abraham that he and his wife would have a son and from that son Abraham would become the father of many nations he didn’t question the logistics behind that promise. Let’s be real, here’s God telling a 75 year old man that he and his 90 year-old wife would have a child. And if that wasn’t enough the child didn’t come immediately but instead he waited a further 25 years before he saw the fulfilment of that promise.

There are a lot of lessons which can be learned when you study the book of Genesis and Abraham’s interaction with God while he waited for God’s word to be fulfilled. However, I’d like to focus on the fact that God is true to His word. When he makes a promise to us he is faithful to keep it. What I find interesting though is how easy it is to disregard or question God’s promises when they don’t happen in the way or the time frame within which we desire.

As I evaluate my own life I see areas where I would have doubted God and the promises He’s made to me. So many times – especially when I felt down – I questioned whether the things God has spoken to me and has prophesied over my life were ever going to happen. I thought about the many promises in the bible that I once held dear to my heart but chose to stop hoping in because I didn’t see the evidence of them in my life presently.

Today, as I mediated on Romans 4 I felt a renewal of hope in the reminder that our faith is simply believing that God will do what he said he would do. Faith is believing that Christ will finish the work He’s started in me despite my current situation. Faith is believing the I am more than a conquerer in Christ on even on my worst days. Faith is believing that God will provide my every need once I seek Him first even when the bills are piling up and my bank account is running low.

The reality is that faith and righteousness go hand-in-hand. Whatever God has said He will do in your life believe that He will do it. Don’t let your circumstances influence your faith. If God can fulfil his promise of a child to a 100 year-old man and his 115 year-old wife, he is more than capable of doing what he said he would in your life.

Daily Dose – Turn From Your Wicked Ways

2 Chronicles 7-14

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

When God spoke these words he wasn’t speaking to the unsaved. He was speaking to you and I: His people.

God recognized that although we know Him and serve Him we have some ways that are wicked in His sight. He has given us dominion over the earth, but our ways and lack of desire to pray and seek His face prevents us from seeing the manifestation of His goodness in our land.

So many negative things are taking place around the world, and we the people of God have the power to change them.

Will you examine yourself and turn from those things that aren’t pleasing to God, for the sake of your land?

Daily Dose – Ever Present

God Sees

Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.

God is in EVERY place. He’s EVERYWHERE we are and sees EVERYTHING we do.

Wow!

Sometimes we overlook the reality that God isn’t confined to the walls of our church. The reality is, he is everywhere that we are, looking at what we’re doing; both good and evil.

I have surely fallen prey to not being cognoscente of God’s presence in every single aspect of my life.

If we can picture God being right by our sides as we go through our day, how much better would we behave? How much more will we live our lives in accordance to His word and His commandments?

It’s important to remember that our inability to acknowledge God’s presence does not mean he’s not there.

I purpose today to acknowledge the presence of my Father, King, Savior and Friend as I go through my day.

Will you do the same?

Daily Dose – Clean Up Your Act

small-broom-1

Job 42:2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.

There is nothing we can hide from God. He knows our thoughts and much more our deeds.

What do we think about? How does our mind respond to unfavorable situations or people?

Sometimes we “act” the Christian role when faced with negativity but our hearts and minds are far from that of Christ.

God looks at the heart first, so while acting right is commendable it is in vain if we harbor bitterness in our hearts regarding anything. It’s time to think right and act right.

God is looking at us, be sure that what he sees is clean both inside and out.

Daily Dose – Gift of Love

delight

Psalm 149:4 For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation.

God doesn’t just like you, He delights in you. You are so special to Him; He brought you into His salvation so He could spend eternity with you.

God loves each of His children in a special way. You aren’t just another in a long line of His people. He knows every bit of you, your faithfulness and failures, and loves each part of you.

We could never earn such love: it is His special gift to each of us.

Let’s rejoice in that blessing today!

Daily Dose – God Offers Hope

jeremiah_29_11

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

As Judah headed into exile, conquered by a savage pagan people, God offered them hope.

Their prosperity was not an end, though their path through hardship had begun.

When God leads you up a rocky path, your hope and future remain secure in Him.

Faithful trust is all He asks of you.

Daily Dose – He Is Faithful

never fail

Psalm 146:5-6 Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the Lord his God, Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; Who keeps truth forever

You are not the only one who has experienced God’s faithfulness. Through the years, believers have experienced His provision.

Read Old Testament accounts of those who have never seen Him fail. Watch His acts in the New Testament as He showed the church that it could trust Him.

God cannot fail His children, and He will not fail you.

Trust in the God of Jacob, and pass on your testimony of His faithfulness.

Daily Dose – Nothing Is Impossible

Luke 1 37

Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible.

The angel spoke these words to Mary as he gave her the news that the aged Elizabeth would bear a child.

God deals with the impossible in our lives as well. We do not bear a Savior, but how has He helped us understand impossible relationships, juggle a hectic schedule, or help a hurting friend?

God offers aid, whatever we face.

Nothing is impossible for the One at work in our lives.

What impossibilities can He deal with in your life? Have you trusted Him for help?

Daily Dose – Turn To Him

father-and-son

2 Corinthians 6:18 “I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.

Only unconfessed sin can separate you from the Father.

But God never desires such distance. He wants to draw near, like a loving Father who holds His child, provides for them, and helps them at every turn.

Though your earthly father was less than perfect, your heavenly Father is not. He heals your hurts, solves your problems and offers His love at every turn.

All you need to do is turn to Him in love.
